"Debate and Relate" is dedicated to providing a forum for meaningful communication with a distinctly Australian style, in an era where the Australian identity is under siege.

Our debates here mirror the cut-and-thrust of Parliament House, rather than the staid and dull environment of a University Debate hall. So if you're a stuffed shirt lacking in humour, either develop a thick skin, or go elsewhere. We welcome those from across the seas in the spirit of mate-ship, but take heed: this is an Australian board, and our everyday vernacular will not be watered down to accommodate your particular cultural sensitivity. In other words, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".  And the Romans, in this particular instance, enjoy a bit of blood sport and sledging.

We are the children of the UK. We are the children of Europe and Asia. We are the children of every country on earth. But most of all, we are the children of convicts. And it is our convict heritage that defines who we are. We are girt by sea, and pissed by lunchtime; so I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

"I am, you are, we are Australian." What does that mean? In 2006, apparently we have no idea. But I know who I am, and I love my country. It's been good to me, and I don't want to see it shafted.

My ancestors are buried on this land. My late grandfather taught me how to fish. He taught me how to play chess. He taught me how to collect crabs, and gather caterpillars from amongst the broad bean plants.

And he taught me how to jump puddles.
I still reckon we Aussies know how to jump puddles.

So lets do it.
